1. Get popcorn ready for Lux Film Festival

What: Celebrating local & international film

The 14th edition of the Luxembourg City Film Festival kicks off on Wednesday 28 February until Sunday 10 March. Each year, the committee watches over 700 films to make their final selection for the festival, which celebrates films from Luxembourg and abroad. Screenings and events will take place at venues such as the Cinémathèque, Ciné Utopia, Kinepolis, Casino and Neimenster, and international juries will be handing out grand prizes.

Duncan Roberts, who joined the selection committee in 2017, visited Melissa Dalton on The Home Stretch this week to chat about this year’s festival.

2. See Fiddler on the Roof musical

What: Broadway classic
Where: Grand Théâtre, 1 Bd Robert Schuman, 2525 Luxembourg
When: Thursday, 29 February - Saturday, 2 March - info & tickets

In co-production with the Saarländisches Staatstheater, the Grand Théâtre is presenting one of the great Broadway classics, Anatevka, also known as Fiddler on the Roof. The musical about milkman Tevye and his freedom-loving daughters is a story about growing up and generational conflicts. Comedy and tragedy, entertainment and thoughtfulness. The score by Jerry Brock weaves together traditional show tunes with melodies that have permeated Jewish klezmer music for many generations. Joining the international cast is well-known Luxembourgish actor Pitt Simon.

PS: The play is in German, but there are live English subtitles on screen.

3. Hear Nils Frahm

What: Piano electronics

“A breathtaking blend of classical, ambient, and electronic.” That’s Pitchfork’s take on Nils Frahm’s ethereal fusion of piano, synthesizers, and innovative electronic manipulations. Prepare to be enchanted by the sonic tapestries he weaves, the intricate melodies and captivating rhythms, blurring the lines between classical grandeur and electronic innovation.

4. Attend English improv show

The Garage Gang is back! Join this group of talented improvisers for an evening of laughter and spontaneity at the English Improv Show. It’s all very unpredictable (no storyline, no safety net) and will definitely leave you shaking your laughing muscles.

5. Step into VR world

What: Three-week exhibition
Where: Neimenster, 28 Rue Münster, 2160 Luxembourg

The 7th edition of the Virtual Reality Pavilion showcases internationally awarded, innovative works in virtual and augmented reality. For example, discover the story of a young girl during racial segregation in the US, go back in time with Marion Deichmann to France during the Holocaust, travel to the International Space Station or immerse yourself in the poetic universe of the Matzeca indigenous community in Mexico. This is also the place to meet VR artists and industry experts.

6. Visit Resistance Museum on free weekend

What: Reopening

The National Museum of Resistance and Human Rights is hosting an open weekend to showcase its brand-new permanent exhibition, completely reworked museography and tripled surface area. Mini-tours, snacks and a musical performance by André Mergenthaler are on the programme, and entrance is free this weekend only.

With its thematic tour from the German invasion to the liberation, the permanent exhibition retraces the German occupation of Luxembourg during the Second World War - and especially the resistance of its locals.

7. Partake in Ibero-American music masterclass

What: With Triana y Luca
Where: Batiment 4, 66 rue de Luxembourg, L-4149 Esch

The unique folk duo Triana y Luca, which combines Ibero-American folklore with contemporary influences such as jazz and poetry, is giving a free workshop about music from their region. The workshop is open to everyone and no prior musical experience is required. Learn some music, some history and language in this interactive workshop.
