Luxembourg City Film Festival selector Duncan Roberts appeared on The Home Stretch this week to share what we can expect from this year's event!
The 14th edition of the Luxembourg City Film Festival kicks off on Wednesday 28 February until Sunday 10 March. Duncan Roberts, who joined the selection committee in 2017, visited Melissa Dalton on The Home Stretch this week to chat about this year's festival.
Each year, the committee watches over 700 films to make their final selection for the festival, which celebrates films from Luxembourg and abroad. This year sees a heavier focus on LGBTQIA+ content, alongside screenings, Q&As and masterclasses, while the Late Night Bazar - with late-night showings, as the name suggests - and the VR Pavilion will both make a return.
Screenings and events will take place across Luxembourg at venues such as the Cinémathèque, Ciné Utopia, Kinepolis, Casino and Neimenster.
The festival's main awards, including the Grand Prix, Firesci and Documentary prizes, are decided by international juries and festival representatives. This year's films include Love Lies Bleeding, starring Kristen Stewart and Ed Harris; The Outrun, with Saoirse Ronan; and The End We Start From, starring British talents Jodie Comer and Benedict Cumberbatch.
As well as Luxembourgish productions, the festival focuses on films from all over the world, including Romania, the Philippines, Iran and Brazil, in addition to the US and UK. Several screenings will be accompanied by director Q&A sessions. One filmmaker Duncan is particularly excited about is Argentine-Italian director Gaspar Noé.
Luxembourgish actress Vicky Krieps, currently starring in Viggo Mortensen's The Dead Don't Hurt, will be among those handing out prizes at the main ceremony on 9 March, but the festival covers a variety of competitions, with youth juries, children's juries and a press jury. There is also an award to be handed out by the Ministry of Cooperation and Development.
