Ever wondered where to find the best authentic Portuguese food in Luxembourg? Discover RTL reader's top 20 picks!

After the best pizza, the best sushi, and recently the best kebab in the country, we are now looking for the place in Luxembourg where one can eat the best Portuguese food.

Question: What does our RTL survey on the best pizza in the country have in common with our latest survey? Aside from the fact that both are simply delicious, these specialities come from nationalities that are not only strongly represented in Luxembourg but also deeply rooted in our history and culture – namely Italian and Portuguese.

This time, however, we are focusing on Portuguese food culture, which has increasingly found its place in Luxembourg since the 1970s and is now practically indispensable. Just thinking about a barbecue evening, where you enjoy a piece of baguette with Bifana and a Sagres or Super Bock, you realise how normal and natural it is in this country to enjoy Portuguese specialities.

But reducing the food culture of our Portuguese fellow citizens to Bifana and beer would, of course, be simply wrong...
From bacalhau and francesinha to arroz de pato or caldo verde, all the way to pastel de nata... The diversity of Portuguese cuisine knows virtually no bounds.

Just as we are spoiled in Luxembourg with good pizzerias, there are also many excellent places where one can enjoy traditional Portuguese delicacies. But the question often remains: where should one go? Perhaps there are also more hidden spots that are well worth a visit for a bite to eat.

The votes are in, and here are the 20 best Portuguese restaurants in the country, as chosen by you!

Readers' Choice Top 20: best Portuguese Restaurant

Rank 1: Op der Gare in Lintgen

Opening of the restaurant: September 1999
Address: 5 Rue de la Gare, 7448 Lintgen
Most popular dishes: Codfish, pork "à Alentejana", skewers
Restaurant's recommendation: Entrecôte Maison

In 1995, Antonio Armando Lima Martins, the owner of the restaurant "Op der Gare," came to Luxembourg and quickly began working in the restaurant industry. Not just anywhere, but at the very restaurant where he later became the owner. A restaurant that, as the name suggests, is located directly at the train station in Lintgen.

In 1999, four years later, he took over the restaurant, a building which is also under heritage protection, and has owned it ever since – now for 25 years. Not only that, but he also owns the restaurant ranked seventh, Op der Gare II in Medernach. The fact that his restaurant ranks first is no coincidence; it is backed by know-how and experience.

Although finding staff in the restaurant business is increasingly difficult these days, he still enjoys his work immensely. It is a classic Portuguese restaurant with a café area and a large modern dining space with a terrace in the courtyard. Around 75% of his regular customers are, by the way, Luxembourgers, something that brings Lima great joy and suggests that the locals are convinced by his cooking.

The popularity of Op der Gare is demonstrated not only by a first-place ranking in our poll but also by the reservations that have been coming in for years. To get a table for the weekend, you need to reserve at least 15 days in advance; otherwise, it’s practically impossible, says the owner. Congratulations on first place – reservations are likely to continue growing.
