Have you always wondered where people in Luxembourg prefer to eat their kebab or dürüm? Find out in our Top 20!

After finding the best pizza and recently, the best sushi in the country, we were on a mission to discover the best kebab in Luxembourg.

This Turkish (or is it German?) staple has become the go-to meal for students, a quick lunch break, or even a late-night snack after a night out. The kebab – or 'Döner' in Germany – has long held a firm place in our culinary scene.

But where does it actually come from? The origin is debated, much like the story of the currywurst. One popular theory credits Kadir Nurman, a Turkish guest worker in Berlin for inventing the version we know today. However, the kebab could very well have Turkish roots stretching further back.

What's clear is what makes a real kebab: grilled bread stuffed with thinly sliced meat from a skewer with fresh, crunchy vegetables, and that unmistakable white sauce. Today, we see countless variations, including vegetarian options, with many shop owners boasting unique sauces.

So, where can you find the best kebab in Luxembourg? With so many options, the choice was definitely overwhelming – and so was the number of votes, by the way.

Never before have so many people participated in one of our surveys, so a big thank you to all of you!

Rank 5: Bonus Kebab in Diekirch

Opening of the restaurant: 2020
Reason to go: Bread, pizza, and dough are made in-house here.

This kebab place, ranked among the top five, is the most recent to open its doors, doing so in Diekirch just four years ago, according to Hamit Capar, the owner of Bonus Kebab.

Interestingly, unlike its competitors, this kebab spot is tucked away on a side street in Diekirch's pedestrian zone, making it a bit hidden. Yet, many people seem to find their way there. Even on a Wednesday evening, the place was consistently busy.

During our visit, it was immediately noticeable that much is made in-house, whether it's the dough for the dürüm, the pizza, or the bread for the kebab itself. With great love for the craft and dedication to their profession, many components of their products are made on-site, with strong attention to quality and hygiene.

The people of Diekirch and the surrounding area are certainly enthusiastic, and this young establishment has definitely earned its place in the top five!

Rank 4: Snack Lara in Bonnevoie

Opening of the restaurant: 2001
Reason to go: Modern, large, and centrally located in the city.

The first thing that stands out about this kebab restaurant, which has been around for 23 years in the heart of Bonnevoie, is its modern appearance, both inside and out. Snack Lara, owned by Habib Yavuzyigit and Erdogan Veysel, is certainly hard to miss.

In conversation with Yavuzyigit, you could sense how pleased he is with this location, and how much joy he gets from receiving such positive feedback from people in this way. For his team, it's a real honour, as it comes directly from the customers, and they are what matters most. He admits though that he was particularly happy to secure first place in the centre and is already aiming to improve for the next time.

It's worth noting that being number one in the centre of the country and ranking fourth overall in such strong competition is no small feat.

Rank 3: Euro Kebab in Esch-sur-Alzette

Opening of the restaurant: 1997
Reason to go: One of the oldest kebab stands in the country, also open late at night.

Anyone who lives, works, or has gone to school in Esch-sur-Alzette knows this place well. Euro Kebab is for many people a true institution in the fast-food scene, especially in the south of the country. Leyla and her son are now in charge of the snack bar, but before them, her husband was the owner, followed by his sister and brothers. It's a family business in the truest sense of the term.

Customers have always been particularly grateful to get a kebab after midnight here. However, those days are over since Covid; the rules have become stricter, and they now close by 11pm or midnight at the latest. What matters, according to the owners, is that they do their work with love every day and take joy in it.

By the way, the future of Euro Kebab is already secured, as the next generation in the family is ready to take over.

Rank 2: Antalya Snack in Rumelange

Opening of the restaurant: January 2004
Reason to go: Friendly staff, plenty of space for larger groups, centrally located in Rumelange.

Mohammad Shamshiri was not expecting to secure second place in this ranking, but he is pleased with the many votes his restaurant in Rumelange received. Antalya Snack has been around for over 20 years and continues to attract a large number of visitors.

His snack bar is also the most popular kebab spot in the south, which is a significant achievement given the abundance of kebab restaurants in the Minett region. The competition in the south is fierce, to say the least!

It is important to Shamshiri that his customers are satisfied with what they receive, and he can notice and see that. Ultimately, it is up to the customers to decide where they will eat. Therefore, this ranking serves as a confirmation for him. Perhaps, as a motivation for his kebab restaurant, he might even eye first place next time.

So, if you find yourself in Rumelange in the future, it's worth checking out!

Rank 1: Kebab Haus in Echternach

Opening of the restaurant: 1999
Reason to go: The owner Yakup's openness and warmth towards customers

Taking first place with a significant lead over the competition is Kebab House in Echternach. Its central location, not far from the high school in Echternach, makes the Kebab House a true meeting point where young and old gather to enjoy a good kebab in a family-friendly atmosphere.

The choice of so many people for the Kebab House in Echternach can be attributed not only to the excellent kebabs, the fantastic sauce, and the fresh vegetables, but also to the owner Yakup Kilic's approach to serving and communicating with his customers. This means a lot to him, as Yakup mentioned in an interview, frequently interrupted by customers who come to greet him and seek direct contact with him. There's a real coming and going at the Kebab House.

Kilic practically knows everyone by name, which is quite special these days and is very well-received by the customers. He also shared that the Covid period was one of the worst times of his life because he missed the contact with people in his snack bar.

You can see how much joy his work brings him after nearly 25 years here and how much he values the heartfelt and open connection with his customers – something he emphasises repeatedly. Many friendships have formed here and Luxembourg is undoubtedly his home, feeling more comfortable doing his work in his snack bar in Echternach than anywhere else in the world.

He expresses deep gratitude to all his customers for their years of loyalty, and his excitement about securing first place was unmistakable on the day we shared the news with him. He assured us that he would continue to serve his customers for a long time to come.
