Surrounded by peaks and villages, Andorra is perfect for summer visitors seeking nature, wellness, and a break from the ordinary.
We are officially kicking off the summer and with it our colleagues from RTL Radio are launching their series on alternative holiday destinations in Europe.
For many, vacation means sun, beach, and relaxation. But not everyone seeks an all-inclusive getaway in the Canaries. Some travellers prefer to break from routine, discover something new, and explore a lesser-known corner of Europe.
We begin with a country five times smaller than Luxembourg and full of surprises: Andorra.
Small, but with lots of character
Andorra, nestled between France and Spain, has around 80,000 inhabitants on its small territory of just 468 km². Despite its reputation as a tax haven, this small mountain country is a true underdog among European travel destinations and at the same time one of those places that can impress the most.
Andorra la Vella, the capital, is located at over 1,000m altitude and is considered the highest capital in Europe.
The country is modern, safe, and prepared for visitors – all year round.
Nature that inspires
Those who travel there in summer can look forward to an impressive mountain backdrop, fresh air, and an unusual diversity of activities. It does not always have to be just hiking, even though that is probably one of the best things to do in Andorra.
The Madriu-Perafita-Claror Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage site, offers landscapes that are not only a feast for the eyes but also bring peace and a sense of absolute freedom.
In addition, keen cyclists will find a true paradise here: scenic routes through the spectacular Pyrenees, electrifying trails, and a host of sporting challenges are sure to set outdoor enthusiasts’ hearts racing. Andorra may be small, but it embraces summer with style – right at the mountain peaks.
Wonderful in winter, refreshing in summer
In winter, the country transforms into a popular ski hotspot. With over 300km of pistes and state-of-the-art ski infrastructure, the Grandvalira Resort is one of the largest winter resorts in Europe. But even outside the ski season, the area is highly praised.
Sport and nature go hand in hand here – and that also applies to more unusual activities like climbing parks and golf. The latter is played here at over 2,200m. A course with views of the imposing Pyrenees not only offers a challenge but also a scene straight out of a film.
Wellness in a futuristic setting
If you want to swap trainers for a bathrobe, you should not miss the Caldea spa centre. The thermal and wellness temple in the capital is known not only for its extraordinary architecture, with a glass pyramid and futuristic lines, but also for its spectacular interior. Even from the outside, the spa is a highlight.
Lagoons, saunas, light and sound shows, and a range of baths – including a lemon water pool, an ice cabin and a jacuzzi solarium – ensure you feel like you are in another world. It is wellness with a twist: varied, extraordinary, and ideal for relaxing after an active day.
Culture between Romanesque style and reflection
Culturally, Andorra goes beyond the usual clichés. The Casa de la Vall, the former parliament, still stands as a symbol of the country's history in the centre of Andorra la Vella and can be visited today.
Elsewhere across the country you will come across small Romanesque churches, old bell towers and beautiful frescoes – reminders of a time that is still part of Andorra’s way of life.
Those who take the time to leave the main road will not only discover historical gems but also small villages where people continue to live much as they did generations ago.
Good food and good shopping
In a place like this, food is not neglected either. The cuisine is a mix of Catalan, Spanish, and Alpine traditions – from cheese and potato dumplings to local sausages and stews, to nougat and baked biscuits. The food is simple but cooked with heart.
And because Andorra is still tax-free, shopping remains a key part of any visit. Perfume, electronics, or branded goods – you can get it all here at prices that not only make your eyes shine but also lighten the burden on your wallet a little.
A destination that convinces
Andorra is the perfect holiday destination for those who want to experience a lot without falling into mass tourism. It is a country that you can see in a weekend but also spend a week in, as you will always discover a new road, another view, or a different highlight.
Outdoor adventure, wellness, or culture – Andorra is small but full of big moments and a destination that truly convinces.
