And they are not necessarily the ones with playgrounds or a kids' corner.

Recently, a friend asked me for ideas for places to eat with the kids that would not leave them bored. I was intrigued.

Did she mean restaurants with playgrounds inside or nearby, or a kids' corner?

Not necessarily, she said: just restaurants with character, an inviting atmosphere, or décor that sparks the imagination.

So I did a little research. Here are some places I think parents will find useful.

D. Majin – Restaurant Manga, Seraing, Belgium

With a great vibe, manga- and anime-inspired décor, food, and drinks, cocktails for the parents and a cosplay atmosphere, Belgium's first manga restaurant has become a sensation among manga lovers and beyond.

GALAXIE WOK, Cosnes-et-Romain, France (near Longwy)

The futuristic setting, lighting and displays, the presentation of the food, and the little robots circulating to serve drinks are all part of an experience everyone, including the kids, will enjoy. Booking is highly recommended, especially at weekends.

Try to get a table inside the 'sphere' for an extra touch of atmosphere. And arrive hungry: this all-you-can-eat buffet has a huge variety of food on offer.

MADY'N BURGER, Ciney, Belgium

This burger restaurant occasionally transforms into the world of Harry Potter or other imaginary universes, with every corner given a makeover. It has become extremely popular, so be sure to book when the themed decorations are up.

Hans & Gretel Pancake House, Zeewolde, Netherlands

Of course, I could not leave out Hans & Gretel Pancake House in Zeewolde in the Netherlands.

It really is out of this world. You will hardly know where to look in this restaurant and café, with its extraordinary array of decorations, hidden passages, upside-down worlds, and more.

There is magic everywhere, even in the glowing glasses your drinks can be served in. If you ask me, this may be one of the most magical restaurants in Europe.

La Marmite des Trolls, Belgium

Dining here feels almost like stepping into a fantasy story, with unusual furniture, a fireplace, and imaginative, magical details. Not far from enchanting Durbuy, it is part of La Balade des Gnomes, whose unusual accommodation includes the chance to stay inside the Trojan Horse.

Unique and amazing!

Zum Alte Zunftscheune, Traben-Trarbach, Germany

A restaurant like no other, combining the feel of an old barn and a museum. Objects from the past and rustic details take diners on a journey through history that will enchant young and old.

It is certainly one of the highlights of a visit to the villages and small towns along the German stretch of the Mosel, and probably one of the best restaurants of its kind in the region.

Alte Zunftscheue – Restaurant und Ferienwohnungen

Wirtshaus zur Glocke, Trier, Germany

The medieval style, atmospheric cellar, historic rooms, stonework, and authentic interiors are sure to charm the whole family. Dine like knights and share stories of times gone by with the children.

La Cabane de Marie, Buhl-Lorraine, France

No need to travel to North America: head instead to La Cabane de Marie, a wooden cabin with rustic décor and charming little details.

Inspired by the cabins of Canada and North America, it offers something unique in the region.
