A family friendly itinerary for a wonderful day trip.
I know… you would most probably never think to visit Kaiserslautern with kids or let us say it would not be on top of your bucket list. I believe this article will make you change your mind. TravelmatKanner is sharing with you a family friendly itinerary doable in one day (a sunny Sunday perhaps) of course you don’t have to follow exactly the same but you can adapt to your family preferences and travelling style.
You drive approximately 1h 40 min to Germany from the Luxembourg border.
First stop: Schlossberghohlen Homburg
What is that, you wonder…
It is actually a place with very unique caves, interesting rock formations, beautiful colors, a labyrinth feeling and can be visited in one hour. What we liked in particular was that these caves are completely different from all the other caves we have visited in and around Luxembourg. The colors of the rock formations are mesmerizing
Protective gear for the head is provided; was nice to see helmets for children were available
There is a small entry fee: €14 for a family of 4.
To reach the caves you pass also the Karlsberg brewery https://www.homburger-schlossberghoehlen.de

Second Stop: Jagersburger Weiher
An amazing nature area full of lakes, forests, lake restaurants, hotels, mini golf and a water playground suitable for small kids.
The nature there is breathtaking; hiking around the lake is just beautiful, there is also Fun Forest Abenteuer for more thrills, climbing trees and zip lines.
This is an area we will definitely visit more times especially in spring / summer time and hope you will do the same.
More information on Jaegersbuger Weiher you can find here.

Third Stop - in the city of Kaiserslautern where you can enjoy:
The Japanese Garden:
Kids loved the sound of the running water, the great variety of plants and trees, the stones on the water that you can step on, and the big figs in the water. A nice little café offers some food, drinks and ice-creams.
Overall the visit was very pleasant although the garden is not very big, but has big variety of plants and trees
The Garden is closed on Mondays. More info here.

Gartenschau park: with dinosaurs and currently there is even a sand sculptures exhibition.

WildPark Kaiserslautern:
Beautiful forest with kids friendly hiking trails and experience walk, animals like deer and wild boar can be seen, strollers could go to parts of the park but not to all hiking trails. Picnic tables spread along the paths.
We absolutely loved it there and it is free and open all year around. More info.

At the end of the day if you are hungry there are numerous restaurants in Kaiserslautern; we like Hans im Glück we tried in other German cities because it was many wood elements, big variety of vegan, vegetarian and other burgers , cocktails alcoholic and non- alcoholic, tasty homemade lemonade and great ambience
In the area of Homburg, Neukirchen, you can also find Gondwana Prehistoreum, an interactive museum with dinosaurs, and Gulliver Welt, a nice park with miniatures.
So we hope you will put Kaiserslautern on your map and we are sure you will enjoy an amazing family time there 😊
Happy explorations.
