If your child enjoys swimming and is looking for a new challenge, perhaps they would be interested in joining one of Luxembourg's many swimming clubs.
As well as offering classes to all levels, from beginner to advanced, swim clubs provide competition level opportunities as well as water polo coaching, synchronised swimming and diving classes.
Swimming clubs
In Luxembourg, the Federation of Swimming and Lifesaving (FLNS) regulates, organises and develops swimming and lifesaving activities. Many of the swim clubs affiliated with the FLNS offer lessons in swimming, water polo, diving, synchronised swimming and open water swimming. They also offer their members opportunities to be involved in competitions and championships. There is a full list of the member clubs on the FLNS website.
Schwammclub Differdange offers lessons in AquaSud, Differdange, from the age of four years old, working all the way up to competition level. There is a water polo team and a synchronised swimming group. Esch-sur-Alzette boasts two swimming clubs: the Swimming Club ERA and the Barracuda Swimming School who train at various locations across the city and welcome students of all levels. The Cercle de Natation in Dudelange offers a range of beginner, advanced, competitive and elite groups. SC Mondercange accepts children from the age of four and Pétange Swimming Club offers diving lessons as well as traditional swimming and aqua gymnastics.
Heading into Luxembourg City, there are three FLNS approved swim schools. Swimming Luxembourg holds lessons at a whole host of locations across the city, including Belair, Gasperich, Bonnevoie, Cents and Lycée Michel Lucius. They offer lessons younger children and older students, from beginner to competition level, as well as water polo and synchronised swimming. The Konschtsprang Veraïn Lëtzebuerg give lessons at the Coque and the Luxembourg Sharks Swimming Club team teaches at pools in Gasperich and Gare.
Further north, there is the Dolphin swimming club in Ettelbruck and the Swimming Circle in Diekirch which accepts children from the age of five. Echternach Swimming Club trains at Junglinster, but unfortunately, they cannot accommodate beginners as there is no teaching pool so learners must be able to swim at least 25 meters autonomously without interruption. Wiltz has a swim school which offers competitive lessons as well as more informal sessions.
Check the FNLS calendar for up-to-date information on local and national swimming competitions, festivals and events, diving prizes and water polo matches.
Many sporting clubs and associations benefit from a government subsidy which they can then pass on to the customer. You may be able to get up to €150 reimbursement on your child's membership fees, so contact the club for further details.
There are of course more informal lessons which take place at many of the private and municipal pools across the country, so it's worth visiting your local pool for more information. And don't forget to look into swimming lessons for babies and toddlers for options for younger children!
