Luxembourg will be well represented at this year’s Berlinale, the renowned international film festival in Berlin, through several co-productions across multiple sections.
In the Berlinale Special Gala, which presents non-competition films destined for wide release, the Austrian-German-Luxembourgish co-production Die Blutgräfin (The Blood Countess) will be featured. Directed by Ulrike Ottinger and produced by Luxembourg’s Amour Fou, the film blends mystery, fantasy, and black comedy. Scenes were shot in various Luxembourg locations in March 2025, including Larochette, the Grand Hôtel Cravatte, the bars Interview and Namur, as well as Mersch Castle.
Another Amour Fou co-production will appear in the Forum section, known for curating socially engaged and aesthetically experimental works. Die Liebhaberinnen (Women as Lovers), directed by Luxembourgish filmmaker Koxi, is a German-Luxembourgish adaptation of Nobel laureate Elfriede Jelinek’s novel. The film is described as a dark tragicomedy exploring the value of love and the impossibility of feminist empowerment.
The Panorama section, dedicated to international arthouse cinema, will feature the co-production ROYA. Also an Amour Fou project, the film is a collaboration with Germany, Czechia, and Iran. Directed by Iranian filmmaker and feminist activist Mahnaz Mohammadi, it tells the story of an Iranian teacher imprisoned for her political beliefs, who must choose between a forced televised confession and indefinite solitary confinement.
Beyond the official selection, Luxembourg will have a presence at the European Film Market (EFM), one of Europe’s largest film trade events, alongside Cannes. The co-production The Last Frontier, a project with Luxembourg’s Les Films Fauves and Argentina, will be featured. Additionally, the animation project Granny is a Tree, directed by Hugo De Faucompret and co-produced by Luxembourg’s Doghouse Films with France, will be part of the EFM Animation programme, which includes the inaugural Annecy Animation Showcase.
The 76th Berlin International Film Festival will be held from 12 to 22 February.
