2021 has been a rich year for Luxembourgish cinema at Cannes, with three films co-produced in the Grand Duchy presented to the film industry’s best and brightest.
Samsa Film presented Joachim Lafosse’s Les Intranquilles and Ari Folman’s Where is Anne Frank on the Croisette screens, while Mélusine Productions is previewing Patrick Imbert’s Le sommet des Dieux.
However, Luxembourg actress Vicky Krieps has matched the country’s success at Cannes 2021 with no fewer than three films in the official selection, in three different languages.
On Sunday, the granddaughter of politician Robert Krieps caused a sensation - and even a few tears - along with the crew of the film Bergman Island by director Mia Hansen-Løve.
In this tribute to Swedish filmmaker Ingmar Bergman, Krieps features alongside English actor Tim Roth. The actress is also part of the cast of Mathieu Amalric’s latest film Serre-moi fort, as well as that of the German short film Frida presented in the Cinéfondation selection.
Krieps, who shot to fame after the 2017 film Phantom Thread by Paul Thomas Anderson, is not limited to Cannes - she will next feature in Old, by M. Night Shyamalan, in cinemas from 21 July.
