More than 1 million Facebook users pledged to meet up and "storm Area 51" in the Nevada desert. Their slogan? "They can't stop all of us."
It's probably one of the USA's best kept secrets and a veritable mecca for conspiracy theorists. The mysterious Area 51 lies in the Nevada desert, around 100km away from Las Vegas. The air force base has particularly been associated with conspiracy theories pertaining to UFOs.
The creator of the Facebook page "Storm Area 51: They can't stop all of us" described the collective plan as follows: "We will all meet up at the Area 51 Alien Center tourist attraction and coordinate our entry. If we Naruto run, we can move faster than their bullets. Let's see them aliens."
The American authorities were not amused. A spokesman argued that "[Area 51] is an open training range for the U.S. Air Force, and we would discourage anyone from trying to come into the area where we train American armed forces."
The event is scheduled to kick off on 20 September. We'll have to wait and see if the raid will confirm extraterrestrial life.
