The Ministry of State and the Maison du Grand-Duc have announced the forthcoming appointment of Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume as Lieutenant Representative, set for 8 October 2024. This follows the National Day announcement regarding initial steps toward a future throne change.
The scheduled events include the signing of the corresponding grand ducal regulation at the palace, followed by a swearing-in ceremony in the Chamber of Deputies, as mandated by the Constitution.
The Lieutenancy will serve as preparation for Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume's future duties, although it may be several years before a formal throne change occurs. Grand Duke Henri himself assumed the role of Lieutenant Representative on 4 March 1998, before ascending to the throne on 7 October 2000. His father, Grand Duke Jean, similarly served as Lieutenant Representative from 28 April 1961 until his accession to the throne on 12 November 1964.
While Grand Duke Henri has expressed his intention to abdicate and has discussed a timeline with his family, specific details have not yet been disclosed. The 8 October date marks a significant step in the process in the abdication preparations for Grand Duke Henri, who is currently 69 years old.
"It is with all my love and confidence that I wish him, from the bottom of my heart, good luck", Grand Duke Henri expressed during initial announcement to his son.
