The musical adaptation of the first book in Rick Riordan's hit series Percy Jackson is running this November at the Kinneksbond Centre Culturel in Mamer.
Director Clare Williams, assistant director Bella Stenton Williams, and lead actor David Puc joined The Sam Steen Show on Today Radio this week to talk about the production, which is based on the first book in Rick Riordan’s hit Percy Jackson series, currently being adapted for Disney Plus.
The show offers a fast paced retelling of Percy’s first adventure, packed with folk, soul and rock influenced songs and a few big ballads along the way. On stage, Percy discovers he is the half-blood son of a Greek god, is attacked by monsters, and sent to a summer camp for demigods. Accused of stealing Zeus’s thunderbolt, he sets off on a quest with Grover, his half-goat best friend, and Annabeth, the daughter of Athena, to find the real thief and prevent a war between the gods.
The production features a cast of 45, including more than 30 young performers. The younger cast members are split into two teams, Bolt and Thunder, with each group performing on different days. Students are also heavily involved behind the scenes, taking on roles such as assistant director, assistant musical director, assistant choreographer, as well as working in make up, lighting and stage management.
In keeping with the spirit of the books, the musical tackles big themes such as heroism, bravery, grief, belonging and the idea of turning limitations into strengths. For younger audiences, it is not only an entertaining show but also a chance to see their peers on stage demonstrating dedication to theatre and storytelling.
