Today Radio InterviewUK post-punk band Squid: "We've got so many ideas"

RTL Today
English post-punkers Squid are back in Luxembourg next week on 6 September at Rockhal. The band's drummer and singer Ollie Judge spoke to Sam Steen ahead of the show.

The band recently released their second album, O Monolith.

Ollie is calling from the studio as he’s working on a tune that “didn’t make it on the second record, so it’s something extra”. With the drummer being the lead singer, does the songwriting process differ from other bands? Does one lead the other?

“It makes your voice a little bit more percussive,” says Ollie. “Doing it separately frees you up to go out and explore”, referring to the recording process in the studio.

Working with producer Dan Carey (Kae Tempest, Nick Mulvey) was a great experience for the band, says Ollie. “We’ve got so many ideas, it’s good to have someone to tell us to stop! Every record he does, he does with great enthusiasm.”

Ollie is also intrigued by trying different pies. So what is the best and worst venue concert catering he has experienced?

“The worst is definitely...we played at a festival in Benidorm, in a Robin Hood-themed resort park....sausages in oily water. There is a venue in Switzerland, they’ve got a restaurant with a Michelin star...they let us eat breakfast, lunch and dinner. That was really amazing.”

“There was a bit of anxiety because we expected a bill, but no”, laughs Ollie.
