“This album is a funeral for the past life and a farewell to it, to make space for a new life full of fantasy and cool stories,” Carter says of Bye Bye Jackie.
The new single June Gloom, featuring a guitar solo by IDLES’ Lee Kiernan, really gives fans (new and old) a glimpse into her evolving sound: loungey, melancholic, and wrapped in a George Harrison-esque atmosphere. Originally written as an acoustic track, it quickly blossomed into a more nostalgic dream, layered with emotion.
“The writing came to me organically – mostly at night, in moments of emotional confusion.” The title track Bye Bye Jackie is the most personal: “It’s about letting go of stress and old patterns.” As for Four Letter Words? It’s her live favourite: “It’s got energy, it’s catchy, and it creates an instant connection with people.”
Sonically, she chose warmth over perfection: vintage gear, tape recordings, and live takes using mellotron, Farfisa, and omnichord. You can stick your AutoTune where the sun only shines thrice a decade, no digital polish here – just the crackle of a real moment.
Bye Bye Jackie is, the record label say, an album about love, loss, female identity, and finding freedom off the beaten path.
With vintage recording techniques and a mood that nods to ‘60s French cinema, this is Carter’s most intimate work yet. “I want people to feel connection, nostalgia, sadness, hope – real emotions,” she says.
Her hope? That the album inspires listeners to write their own stories, to let go of the past, and step into a new chapter filled with imagination, imperfection, and true connection. “It’s not just an album. It’s a goodbye, a leap, and an invitation.”
