Tonight on The Artist Hour, we shine a spotlight on Say She She, the New York trio blending disco, funk, and punk energy into something entirely their own.
Fronted by Piya Malik, Sabrina Mileo Cunningham, and Nya Gazelle Brown, Say She She have just released their third album Cut & Rewind on drink sum wtr, a record that captures their trademark mix of groove, attitude, and political edge.
Written and recorded between tour dates at Killion Sound in Los Angeles, Cut & Rewind reflects the pace of a band constantly in motion. The group describe it as “a snapshot of our lives over the past few years,” a reflection of the chaos, joy, and urgency that come with creating music on the move.
Across twelve tracks, Say She She channel their love of late seventies soul and disco, drawing inspiration from artists like Minnie Riperton, Rotary Connection, ESG, and Lonnie Liston Smith. Songs such as She Who Dares and Disco Life combine irresistible rhythms with sharp social commentary, proving that their music can make you think as much as it makes you dance.
Formed when Malik and Cunningham discovered they could hear each other singing through the floorboards of their Lower East Side apartments, Say She She built their sound on friendship, harmonies, and a shared sense of purpose. Since then, they have performed on national television, toured with Thee Sacred Souls and Chicano Batman, and earned praise from fans including Nile Rodgers and Childish Gambino.
Tonight’s show features music from Cut & Rewind, along with fan favourites and collaborations with Neal Francis, tracing the evolution of a band whose sound keeps growing in depth and confidence with every record.
