Wolf Alice have released their new single The Sofa, a poignant piano ballad from their upcoming fourth album The Clearing, due out 22 August.

The track was first debuted to a rapturous response at Primavera and later performed during their triumphant return to Glastonbury, solidifying the band’s reputation as one of Britain’s most powerful live acts.

With soaring vocals and introspective lyrics wicked piano ripples and glorious strings, The Sofa hits on themes of acceptance, growth, and letting go of youthful expectations, it is a HUGE step forward and a real showcase of frontwoman Ellie Rowsell’s most honest songwriting yet.

Lyrically, The Sofa explores the contrast between the grandiosity of life on tour and the comfort of everyday moments, such as watching TV at home. Rowsell explains it as a meditation on aging, contentment, and surrendering the need for constant reinvention: “It’s okay if I just want to rewatch Peep Show for the thirteenth time.”

The single follows The Clearing’s first release, the bombastic Bloom Baby Bloom, a hard-hitting anthem about transformation and expansion, paired with a stylised video directed by Colin Solal Cardo and choreographed by Ryan Heffington.
