English singer-songwriter Calum Scott played sold out shows at den Atelier on Friday and Saturday night. RTL Today’s Patrycja Pruchenska was there for the second and shares why it was one of the best gigs she’s ever attended.

It is Saturday night, 8 April 2023, and den Atelier in Luxembourg City is PACKED. A mix of impatience, anticipation and excitement lies in the air. Blair Davie, the support act, has successfully put the crowd into the right mood with an emotional performance à la Ed Sheeran. Scott has definitely made the right call in collaborating with Davie.

But back to the headliner himself!

Calum Scott is one of the most beloved singer/songwriters in the UK. He started his career in 2015 when he participated in Britain’s Got Talent. Even though he only placed 6th, his performance of Robyn’s Dancing On My Own in the auditions has turned out to be his entry ticket to the international music industry.

The artist is on world tour for the next couple of months, promoting his second studio album Bridges (released on 17 June 2022).

Calum Scott creates mostly ballads, the kind of deeply resonant songs that could be background songs to our most meaningful moments in life.

That is the reason I am blown away by the man’s sense of humour and authenticity once he's entered the stage. Granted, I might have gone into the gig with a slight prejudice on the mood and overall direction the show would be taking. Let me tell you this though: I did not expect the performance - and the man himself - to be this funny. Showing great audience interaction, Scott manages to guide us through an emotional rollercoaster of a set: A dynamic beginning, a heart wrenching middle - that he himself calls the crying corner -  and a popping finale. And all of it with is an unearthly voice that sounds exactly like his recordings.

The set naturally includes most of the songs on his newest album, like Biblical, Cross Your Mind and Run With Me, but also some of his older ones, like You Are The Reason, Where Are You Now and Dancing On My Own.

After a 90 minute set and two last songs (because, as he puts it, one just doesn’t cut it), Scott ends the show with a shaky voice, visibly moved by the overwhelmingly warm response from the audience.

Personally, I think Calum Scott must be one of the best live performers I have seen so far. He provides a perfect balance between humour, emotion and goofiness while showcasing an incredible tone range and a voice strength that even Anastasia would be proud of. I do understand why some people have come to see him twice this weekend. I would too.
