The Dudelange municipal council first decided to establish a public library in 1918. It was officially inaugurated three years later in 1921 and started off with 2,600 books. 20 years later, that number had increased to 10,000, and is currently three times that size, e-books included.
In 2003, the institution was relocated to its current home at the end of Rue du Commerce. In the 100 years since it’s foundation, only four head librarians have worked in the Dudelange library.
The library expands over 600 square metres and has more than 1,400 registered readers. Last year, around 1,500 books were rented out.
For the past 20 years, the library has also been organising workshops for pupils to help introduce them to the world of literature. Novels and children’s stories have not displayed any decrease in popularity during that period.
