Confucius Institute announces monthly cinema event

The Confucius Institute, with support from the Allers-Retours Association, is presenting a range of Chinese language films and documentaries with English subtitles at the Cercle Cité, starting Monday, 24 March.

The evening will begin with a screening of the film Within (with English subtitles).

Synopsis

Struggling to provide a better future for her daughter, single mother (Li Qingcao) runs a street stall in Shenzhen while battling the challenges of China’s household registration system. As her daughter's situation begins to mirror her own experiences, she begins to fear her daughter will be trapped in a similar cycle of hardship.

Meanwhile, in Qingcao’s rural hometown, the remains of a man – once a school canteen manager – are discovered at an abandoned primary school, reigniting a decade-old murder case. As Detective Han Yan delves into the mystery, he uncovers unsettling ties between the crime, a group of children, and Qingcao herself. As the investigation unfolds, long-buried secrets come to light, forcing both Li and Han to confront the ghosts of their past.
