The British & Irish Film Festival Luxembourg (BIFFL) returns for its 16th edition on 22–23 March, bringing a diverse selection of films, special guests, and a spotlight on young talent to Ciné Utopia and the Cinémathèque.
The British & Irish Film Festival Luxembourg (BIFFL) is back for its 16th edition, bringing an exciting Spring Edition packed with must-see films, special guests, and a celebration of young talent. Running from 22 to 23 March, the festival will take place at Ciné Utopia, with the Shorts Evening hosted at the Cinémathèque.
Festival organiser Geoff Thompson joined The Sam Steen Show on Today Radio this morning to talk about what's in store. Reflecting on past successes, he shared: "It was wonderful to see films we screened last year winning awards. Kneecap scooped four IFTAs and a BAFTA, while Small Things Like These won three IFTAs.
"We have a really interesting line-up of screenings at our Spring Edition, with a strong emphasis on documentaries as films of this fact-based genre have almost always scored well in the past for our Audience Award."
The festival kicks off with Fidil Ghorm (The Blue Fiddle), an Irish-language drama with English subtitles. "We also have a charming Irish-language drama An Fidil Ghorm which will be our Opening Screening", said Thompson.
The festival will close with Patrick: A Slave to Ireland, a documentary offering a European perspective on the life of St Patrick.
Shorts Evening & Young Filmmakers' Competition
A special Shorts Evening will feature Being Human, a 10-minute documentary created by the winners of the Young Filmmakers' Competition 2023/24, alongside short films Dear Imelda and Give Him Time from Ireland. Additionally, the top two entries from the 2024/25 competition will be screened in full, with excerpts from the other submissions also presented.
Special Guests
This year's festival welcomes an impressive lineup of special guests, including:
- Anne McCabe (Director, Fidil Ghorm)
- Eva Birthistle (Director, Kathleen is Here) & Hazel Doupe (Actor, Kathleen is Here)
- Árón Holden (Director, Dear Imelda) & Declan Curran (Actor, Dear Imelda)
- Luxembourgish film producer Paul Thiltges will also be making an appearance to share insights into the film-making process.
