...or read on to find their six picks!
"All Fours" by Miranda July
The New York Times praised the book, but Sasha's opinion differs sharply: she hated it! However, don't let this discourage you from reading "All Fours". Despite the Times' recommendation, Sasha found Miranda July's novel disappointing. She expected profound insights on monogamy and personal freedom but instead encountered what she viewed as smutty and self-indulgent themes, with characters she couldn't relate to in real life.
"My Family and Other Animals" by Gerald Durrell
Sasha found "My Family and Other Animals" by Gerald Durrell to be a delightful departure from her previous disappointment with July's novel. Set in pre-tourism Corfu, the book vividly portrays Durrell's whimsical childhood within a bohemian family and his deep fascination with wildlife. It's a humourous journey where even the antics of tortoises come to life, observed keenly by Durrell's ever-patient mother who tolerates pelicans in their bathtub. Blending naturalist observations with comedic anecdotes against a charming Mediterranean backdrop, the book is a truly enjoyable read.

"What About Men?" by Caitlin Moran
Liked by both Meredith and Sasha, Caitlin Moran's "What About Men" diverges from typical beach reads by sparking genuine discussions rather than offering light entertainment. Fearlessly tackling male issues, Moran explores topics like male role models, suicide rates, and societal pressures with insight and humor. Her refreshing approach challenges norms and encourages deeper understanding of masculinity in today's world, making the book essential for those interested in addressing these complexities.

"It Ends with Us" by Colleen Hoover
Colleen Hoover's upcoming book-to-screen adaptation, eagerly anticipated by BookTok enthusiasts, promises to be a thrilling cinematic experience starring Blake Lively. Hoover, renowned for her compelling narratives, describes this particular work as one of her most challenging yet captivating creations. With its reputation as a gripping page-turner, exemplified by "November 9", readers are encouraged to dive into this novel before its film adaptation hits theatres, ensuring they're fully immersed in the story's emotional journey and complexities.

"Taste: My Life Through Food" by Stanley Tucci
Sasha also recommends Stanley Tucci's memoir, "Taste: My Life Through Food", where the American actor delves into his profound love for food, intertwined with reflections on his life. This delightful blend of culinary passion and personal anecdotes paints Tucci as the quintessential friend who values food, entertaining, and enjoyment in the evening hours.

"Kensuke's Kingdom" by Michael Morpurgo
Meredith's final recommendation is a heartwarming story about parents who, after losing their jobs, decide to embark on a sailing adventure around the world with their dog. It's a touching tale that's perfect for children, exploring themes of love, loss, forgiveness, hope, and redemption. A beautiful animated film adaptation currently showing in Luxembourg, makes it an excellent choice to read and then watch with children.
All available at Ernster Bookshop — you can find any of this month's edition of exciting reads in person or order them online. Happy reading and enjoy your summer adventures with these fantastic books!
