Luxembourg crime-thriller Capitani is a rip-roaring success.

The Samsa production “Capitani” has broken the records of any RTL fiction ever produced. According to TNS Ilres1, 147,500 viewers – 29% of the population over the age of 16 – tuned in to RTL Télé Lëtzebuerg on Tuesday nights to view one or more episodes of the Luxembourgish crime series.

In addition to the weekly broadcast, the availability of the episodes on catch-up TV was a huge success: 137,500 people viewed at least one episode on the internet. In total, 518,000 Capitani videos were watched in replay2 on RTL.lu, RTL5minutes.lu and RTLToday.lu.

Altogether, whether live or on replay, 158,000 unique viewers over the age of 16 in Luxembourg watched “Capitani”.

Following an analysis of the audience’s profile, a very well-balanced account of the population could be determined. “Capitani” reached out to both young and old, with 52% of viewers under the age of 45.

Despite hitting a primarily Luxembourgish audience, more than 50,000 Non-Luxembourgish viewers (22% of the foreign population) watched the series.

This accessibility was in large part thanks to French and English subtitling.

To explain the success of “Capitani” a qualitative study was conducted on the website InternetPanel.lu3. 89.5% of the respondents believed Capitani is “a modern programme that addresses current trends and topics.”

The fact that the series takes place in Luxembourg prompted 95.5% of viewers to watch “Capitani”. One further decisive point that triggered hype: 75.5% said that they “spoke about an episode of “Capitani” regularly followings its broadcast.”

When the series concluded in December with a rather open ending, viewers clearly noticed a hint of continuation in the future: 90.4% of viewers “would like RTL Télé Lëtzebuerg to broadcast another season of “Capitani.”
