The penultimate episode of Game of Thrones received the show's worst ratings over, both amongst fans and reviewers (although the episode also pulled in a record number of viewers). Now, a petition on Change.org calling for the season to be remade without the showrunners' involvement is fast gaining traction.

Without spoiling any information from the latest Game of Thrones episode, it is safe to say that the showrunners have certainly caught the ire of diehard and less committed fans alike.

David Benioff and D.B. Weiss took to adapting the hugely popular fantasy series, but as the show has continued and the source material has...dried up, fans have found the plot lacking. Whilst there has been criticism for seasons as early as five, the latest and final season has especially been slammed for sloppy writing and a pace which is just too fast.

On Change.org, fans have been signing a petition addressed to HBO to " Remake Game of Thrones Season Eight with competent writers." At the time of publication, the petition has 750,072 signatures.

The petition text writes: "David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have proven themselves to be woefully incompetent writers when they have no source material (i.e. the books) to fall back on.  This series deserves a final season that makes sense.

Subvert my expectations and make it happen, HBO!"

The last phrase refers to Benioff and Weiss's preferred methods of "subverting expectations" with plot twists, even if said plot twists may not make any sense. Fans on the Game of Thrones subreddits (notably r/Freefolk, a subreddit infamous for publishing leaks to the show) have highlighted that they do not necessarily think the petition will amount to anything, but it will show Benioff and Weiss that their way of ending the show has disappointed many.

Some suspect Benioff and Weiss were the only ones in a hurry to finish the show to move on to Star Wars, especially as HBO was prepared to make the show a ten-season saga.
