As the Bibliotheque nationale de Luxembourg’s archives will move to a new home in March, the aim is to reduce dust and dirt as much as possible in introducing documents to their new home.
Around 40 kilometres of documents will be moved from the old site to the new site off Avenue J.F. Kennedy. The BNL has a number of steps it must complete before it begins the arduous task of moving the documents.
Library workers in the library’s older buildings are currently tasked with cleaning all the books, documents, and other archived material in order to ensure that as little dust as possible moves to the new building.
All 1.8 million books and documents will be based at the new library site in Kirchberg, rather than spread over seven different sites.
The book cleaning process is meticulous - workers must remove books by the shelf and dust both the shelf and the books, only to return them back to the shelf. Come March, the books will be packed up and moved to their new home.
The BNL has hired five moving companies to assist in this momentous task. Two of those companies are based in Luxembourg and three are German.
