The first remnants of a Roman villa in Echternach were discovered in 1975. It took archaeologists only 15 months to uncover the rest of the ancient building.
Since then, the history museum has been running and maintaining the site.
While the ancient site is always open to the public, a special treat awaited guests this past Sunday. The open day invited visitors to discover botanical, archaeological and culinary particularities specific to the Romans.
At the site of the 2000 year old structure, visitors could discover what the Romans would have eaten and drank when they inhabited the imposing home. A botanical garden offered visitors a peek into a Roman herb garden and a botanical crash course explained the particularities of the current vegetation around the site.
Visitors were also introduced to the ancient architecture of the structure, of which little has survived.
