The board of the Esch 2022 project has decided not to extend the contracts of the two project coordinators.

There has been quite a bit of controversy surrounding Andreas Wagner and Janina Strötgen's roles as coordinators for the European Capital of Culture project for Esch. The mayor of Esch, Georges Mischo, remains one of their fiercest critics.

At the board of management's meeting on Wednesday, the board unanimously decided that the two coordinators' contracts would not be extended and instead offered Wagner and Strötgen different roles.

However, the two coordinators rejected the suggested roles. A move which suggests that their involvement in the Esch 2022 project has come to an end.

Now that the project does not have coordinators the board will be open to new applications for the roles on Saturday 30 June, which is the expiry date of the current contracts of Wagner and Strötgen. The roles will be open to both national and international applicants, although Luxembourgish candidates or those originating from the Grande Region will have a slight advantage.

The new team will start working in the autumn.
