The Etruscans were a powerful civilisation in ancient Italy which continues to stir debate among historians and archaeologists.
Luxembourg City's National Museum of History and Art (MNHA) is proudly presenting a new historical exhibition. Entitled "The Celestial Place. Etruscans and their Gods," the new project displays fascinating objects that were found during excavations carried out since 2000. The objects have given historians and archaeologists new glimpses into the workings of the complex ancient civilisation.
The excavations took place in the Campo della Fiera, a plain below the fortress city of Orvieto, Italy. In 2000, road workers had accidentally uncovered the archaeological complex. It quickly became clear that the site was of unrivalled historical importance. It was mentioned in several ancient historical sources. Archaeologists had been searching for it for hundreds of years.
The site features several ancient temples and sites reserved for making offerings to the gods, as well as the so-called "Via Sacra", or sacred road. This was one of the most important streets of the entire civilisation, running as it did towards the Capitol. Etruscologists from all over the world have already travelled to Luxembourg to view the exhibition. If mysterious ancient civilisations are your thing too, you can visit the exhibition until the 2 September 2018.
