At the World Indoor Championships, Patrizia Van der Weken delivered another strong performance by reaching the women’s 60 metres final and finishing eighth. Following the European Indoor Championships and last year’s World Indoor Championships, this marks the third time the Luxembourg Sportswoman of the Year has reached a 60m final.

Her time of 7.10 seconds was enough to secure eighth place. In the days leading up to the race, Van der Weken had expressed optimism about her chances of winning a medal.

Stronger competition than last year

Luxembourg Olympian Charel Grethen, who commentated on the race for RTL alongside former cyclist Tom Flammang, said afterwards that the level of competition was even higher this year.

Although Van der Weken had hoped to contend for a medal again after 2025, Grethen said her overall performance across the three rounds was solid. Her start out of the blocks was not ideal, and she did not get into the race as well as she had when setting her national record at the same venue a few weeks earlier, according to Grethen.

Nevertheless, Grethen said that it remains a strong result and further proof that the sprinter has established herself among the world’s elite.

Dosso takes gold ahead of Sears and Alfred

Italy’s Dosso secured victory in 7.00 seconds, finishing ahead of US athlete Jacious Sears and Saint Lucia’s Julien Alfred, who both recorded times of 7.03 seconds.
