Patrizia van der Weken was the first Luxembourg athlete to compete at the European Athletics Championships, held for the first time in England. She took part in the 100m sprint final on the opening day in Birmingham, finishing in sixth place.
Her strong performances in recent months saw her ranked 14th in the world and fourth in Europe, which allowed her to qualify directly for the semi-finals on Monday, meaning she was able to skip the preliminary heats that morning.
Ruben Querinjean, aged 24, is scheduled to run the 3,000m steeplechase. He returns to the discipline in which he claimed gold at last year’s University Games in Germany. Ranked 13th in the world, Querinjean has his sights set on a top finish in Birmingham. His first appearance will be in the opening round of the steeplechase on Thursday.
Vera Bertemes-Hoffmann, 29, earned her place at the European Championships in the 1,500m event thanks to her world ranking. The Luxembourg runner will contest two distances in Birmingham: the 1,500m and the 5,000m. Making her debut at international level in the 5,000m, Bertemes-Hoffmann finished 22nd in the race on Tuesday evening.
