Both the Luxembourg men's and women's national teams delivered strong performances at the Table Tennis World Championships in London.
While the women's team clearly asserted themselves against Guatemala, the men's team nearly caused an upset against group favourites Croatia.
The FLTT women had a commanding start to the World Championships, beating Guatemala 3-0 without dropping a single game. Sarah de Nutte, Ni Xia Lian, and Enisa Sadikovic left nothing to chance, offering their opponents no opportunities whatsoever. On Wednesday afternoon, when they face group favourites Portugal, it will become clearer what this first victory is worth.
For the men's national team, the opening match of the World Team Championships pitted them against Croatia. In the first match, Maël van Dessel surprised his opponent Frane Kojic, winning 3-1. In the second match, Luka Mladenovic also performed well, taking a game off Croatian number one Tomislav Pucar and coming close to turning the match in his favour. The following two matches, played by young Aaron Sahr and Van Dessel, ended in clear defeats. The FLTT men's team will face Qatar next on Wednesday, starting at 5pm.
