Gerson Rodrigues will not be eligible to play for the Luxembourg national team for an indefinite period, the Board of Directors of the Luxembourg Football Federation (FLF) has decided.

In a statement, the FLF said the "Gerson Rodrigues affair" had affected the entire Federation. It stressed that the reputation of the institution stands above any individual and that Rodrigues, following his conviction, had shown little insight. As a result, he is not currently selectable.

Despite being found guilty on appeal and handed an 18‑month suspended prison sentence for domestic violence and bodily harm in April, Rodrigues was still nominated for the June friendlies against Slovenia and Ireland. The decision prompted strong criticism of the player, national coach Luc Holtz, and FLF president Paul Philipp. Protests against the call-up took place on social media and in and around the Stade de Luxembourg.

The FLF has since announced the creation of an independent ethics commission.

Rodrigues, 30, is Luxembourg's record goalscorer, with 23 goals in 72 appearances since making his debut in March 2017 in a 1–3 World Cup qualifier defeat to France. His most recent match for the Red Lions was the goalless draw against Ireland in mid‑June.

At the beginning of August, he signed with Kanchanaburi Power FC in the Thai first division.

Recently it was confirmed that these will be the final months of Holtz's tenure as national coach, with his contract set to end in December 2025. Luxembourg will begin their World Cup qualifying campaign in September against Northern Ireland, Slovakia, and Germany.
