Football fans in Luxembourg are eagerly awaiting the start of the new season, as several local football clubs have qualified for the European competitions. Here is a breakdown of the draws and matchups announced in Nyon on Tuesday.
Champions League
Differdange, the Luxembourg champions, are gearing up for an exciting start to their season as they enter the first qualifying round of the Champions League. In the UEFA draw on 18 June, they were paired with Faroe Islands club KÍ Klaksvík, who finished 3rd in their league this season. The two legs are scheduled for 9/10 and 16/17 July 2024. If Differdange is eliminated, they will be relegated to the Conference League, starting in the 2nd qualifying round.
Should Differdange advance, they will face Malmö FF, currently leading the Swedish league, in the 2nd round. These matches are set for 23/24 and 30/31 July. Exact match dates and kick-off times will be announced by 21 June 2024 (for the first round) and 26 June (for the second round). Qualifying for the Champions League involves navigating through three qualifying rounds and a play-off, all scheduled between now and the end of August.
Conference League
Progrès Niederkorn received a bye in the first round and will enter the competition directly in the 2nd qualifying round on 25 July and 1 August. As winners of the national cup and 4th place in the league this season, Progrès will face Sweden's Djurgården, currently 2nd in their league standings.
Other Luxembourg clubs participating in the first qualifying round include F91 Dudelange, seeded in group 2, who will compete against Atlètic Club Escaldes from Andorra. FC Strassen, in group 4, will face KuPS Kuopio, the current leaders in Finland. Should FC Strassen qualify, they will meet Tromsø from Norway.
While the league in Norway is already underway, unlike in Luxembourg, Tromsø's season has been off to a bad start. The club currently ranks 14th out of 16 teams, with just three wins from 11 matches.
