Luxembourg will compete in the inaugural European Hockey5s Championship in Poland from 6-9 July.
The tournament will serve as a qualifier for the very first World Cup in the new format, which will take place in Oman in January 2024.
Hockey5s is a new form of field hockey, with five players (including a goalkeeper) facing off on a smaller field with a "boarding" like in indoor hockey.
It is a discipline that wants to be lively, technical and fun. The matches are divided into three 15-minute periods. In the case of a draw, a two-minute extra time period is played with one player less on each side, continuing until one team wins.
Under the guidance of coach Nacho Gomez-Acebo, the Luxembourg men's team will play its first match on July 6 against Belgium. It will be the first time the two teams will play each other since hockey formally arrived in Luxembourg in 1973.
The Belgians are the favorites for the tournament, but Nacho is convinced that the experience of the Luxembourg team could certainly play in their favor. The national team played its last friendly match against Arlon on Saturday July 2, winning 7-2.
The team will also play Poland on July 6, Ukraine and Cyprus on July 7 and Croatia and Armenia on July 8.
Best of luck to the team!
