Every match will be crucial from here. Some teams are fighting for their lives, some for the European qualification spots – and, the title itself is up for grabs... Although maybe we got a winner yesterday?
Below is a short report about what happened over this past weekend:
85 minutes of inefficiency paid off for Hostert
Hostert had to get a win against Fola to end their 10-match winless streak and find a way out from the relegation playoff zone. Yesterday, they seemed like a dominant, capable team, for the first time in a long time. Playing on the maximum intensity level throughout the first half, Fola was clearly caught by surprise. They needed some time to get going, and fortunately for them, they were allowed as much time as they wanted, as Hostert kept wasting one chance after another. Gilson Delgado broke the deadlock early in the second half, and was later joined on the scoreline by Mirza Mustafic’s stunning volley and Grégory Grisez’s lucky mishit cross from the left wing. It was the perfect wake-up call for Hostert, who woke up too little too late in the end, though. Bigen Yala Lusala and Guillaume Trani scored in quick succession in the last five minutes, but eventually, they couldn’t find a way back into the game.
Wiltz call off Rodangetada
The relegation six-pointer between Wiltz and Rodange was as two-sided as it could have been predicted beforehand, but overall, it’s fair to say that it didn’t live up to the standards we expected. Sanel Ibrahimovic scored the opener for Wiltz with 17 minutes played, and for an extended period of time, both sides seemed content with the 1-0. There were remarkably less attacks – or even sequences of passes that resembled a build-up – in the remainder of the first half. The situation remained unchanged until roughly the last 15 minutes, when Rodange seemed to have realised that a defeat could eventually get them relegated. They tried getting closer to Wiltz’s goal and had a few attempts, but they were struck by a perfect storm: a penalty for Wiltz in the last minute, at 1-0. Edis Osmanovic converted it, reducing the chances of Rodange’s miraculous giant escape to close to zero.
F91 narrowly win ”football fiesta”
The single most important match in the entire league season arrived, and there was no getting away from it. Both teams started the match at an exhilarating tempo, but neither got the early goal they seized. A draw could, in theory, have favoured F91 Dudelange, but if they didn’t want Fola Esch breathing down their necks, they had to clinch all three points here. The game itself was full of nice build-up plays and a plethora of attacking chances, with some of them definitely deserving a goal. However, the opener came in the closing stages of the game: late substitute Samir Hadji finished off an attack from close range to get F91 the three points, Hesper fans a heartbreak and the crowd at Stade Jos Nosbaum something unforgettable.
