This past weekend saw several high-profile derbies as four teams in the top six played each other. Let’s have a look at what exactly happened and where things stand now.
F91’s two main competitors trip each other up
Leaky defending proved to be the stumbling block as Progrѐs Niedercorn held Swift Hesperange to a 2-2 draw at the Stade Jos-Haupert. The defensive misery reached its peak when Mayron De Almeida pounced on a loose ball roughly a meter from Hesper’s goal to give his team a 2-1 lead. Eventually, Stolz rescued a point for the in-form away team, but this draw didn’t help anyone.
Dudelange get lucky three points via unexpected goal
An old cliché says that one common trait of strong teams’ is the ability to win while playing bad. F91 Dudelange seem to have achieved this en route to what could be their first BGL Ligue title since 2018/19. After going down to ten men in the first half – Adel Bettaieb saw red, in a twofold manner – Dudelange played through the entire second 45 minutes holding on for dear life – until Dejvid Sinani’s shot saved the day for the hosts. Their lead is thus now increased to 5 points.
Jeunesse start picking up form – is it too late?
Two consecutive 5-1 wins and 13 points from their last 5 matches saw Jeunesse climbing up some places in the table and they have now overtaken Strassen on goal difference. They tore apart both Etzella and Mondorf, and are now comfortably sitting in mid-table, able to peek hopefully at the sides above them as the gap ever decresases. They will face five top-nine teams in their next five matches so that will be the great test of whether the black-and-whites can dream of something bigger than the top half of the field.
Around the pitches
Rodange recorded a shock win against deeply struggling Strassen; Wiltz, Mondorf and Hostert all gained only one point as the relegation fight intensifies; Union Titus Pétange took a point from the capital as they resisted against Racing; while Fola brushed Hamm Benfica aside with a ruthless but deserved 0-7.
