Teams from Luxembourg, France and Belgium inaugurated the Belgian women’s cricket league on Sunday 15th August.
Trois-Frontières Cricket Club represented Luxembourg, against Royal Brussels, Brussels Greens, and Lille from France.
The Luxembourg team narrowly lost both their games on the opening day in Antwerp. Set 99 to win by Brussels Greens, they fell just 5 runs short of the target.
In the next game, Lille scored 105, with Trois Frontières scoring 95. The Luxembourg team hopes to overturn these results when the championship comes to Luxembourg on 5th September.
Women’s cricket is growing in Luxembourg. On 21 and 22 August there will be an introductory tournament of eight teams featuring around 80 women, most of whom have never played cricket before. This event will be held at the Walferdange ground. This interest will be sustained with games and training during the rest of the outdoor season, and then throughout the winter indoors.
Women have been playing cricket in Luxembourg for three decades, with a focus on domestic matches. However, with the emergence of new players it has become possible to have international ambitions. More recruits are needed to build a solid elite squad, with the ultimate goal of creating a Luxembourg national women’s team.
