The Luxembourger, about whom you can read more in our Duchy Dozen series, surprised us all by qualifying for the finals of the men’s 1500m competition.

With 3 minutes, 32 seconds and 86 hundredths, which is almost 4 seconds quicker than his national record, he finished 7th in the semi-finals. His old national record was 3 minutes, 36 seconds and 75 hundredths.

He was not in the top 5 runners in the semi-finals, but he still managed to secure a place in the final on Saturday.

In 1952, the Luxembourger Josy Barthel won the gold medal for 1500m at the Helsinki Olympics.
