The Tour de France organisers have classified the 174.7-kilometre stage from Chambéry to Voiron as a flat stage. However, it is unlikely to be an easy day for the sprinters. The road to the finish is anything but straightforward. On Stage 17, the riders will have to tackle no fewer than 2,200 metres of elevation gain. Over the first 60 kilometres, four categorised climbs await them (three Category 4 climbs and one Category 3 climb). The terrain remains rolling even after that. Then, with six kilometres remaining, the riders face another climb of 2.6 kilometres at an average gradient of around four percent. Given this profile, the stage could also be an ideal opportunity for a breakaway to succeed.
