After two runs in difficult weather conditions, Luxembourgish skier Matthieu Osch finished the giant slalom race with a delay of 17 seconds on winner Marco Odermatt from Switzerland.

Osch conducted his first run at 4.30 am Luxembourg time on Sunday. He came in as 34th, but managed to improve his position to 28th with his second attempt.

A significant amount of fresh snow paired with fog lead to a difficult race for all participants in Yanqing. Only 54 out of 89 racers managed to complete the first descent.

Marco Odermatt came out on top and secured Olympic gold at the end of the day. The Swiss skier already won four out of five giant slalom world cups this season. Zan Kranjec from Slovenia won silver (+0.19 seconds) and Mathieu Faivre from France bronze (+1.34 seconds).

After his performance on Sunday, Osch already started looking ahead to the slalom race on Wednesday. In a first reaction, he expressed satisfaction over the top 30 ranking under the circumstances and explained how he will prepare for the second race: “I will return to training tomorrow and do two or three runs. Then on Tuesday, the day before the race, we will do some final practice runs on the actual race track.”
