The Luxembourg national football team had to content themselves with a draw against Lithuania on Friday evening in the European Championships qualification round. Despite taking the lead in the 21st minute through a Rodrigues goal, the Red Lions were unable to force the win, conceding in the 74th minute.
Luxembourg came close to forcing the win several times, with unsuccessful shots from Gerson Rodrigues shortly after the first goal. Two Lithuanian players were sent off, with Mikoliunas gaining a second yellow shortly before half time, and Vorobjovas leaving the field in extra time. Sadly, the player advantage did not help, although Luc Holtz’s team had a chance to make it 2-1 seconds before the final whistle, with Bensi narrowly missing the goal.
Luxembourg walked away with a point from the game, but the team will have been frustrated at how close they came to victory.
Ukraine beat Serbia 5-0 in Group B’s other game. Luxembourg will face Ukraine away on Monday.
