Luxembourg’s campaign in the UEFA Nations League began with a promising 2-1 away victory against Bulgaria last Saturday, but was quickly dampened by a 3-0 home defeat to Iceland on Tuesday evening.

The result leaves Luxembourg with three points from their opening two matches, while Iceland top the group with four.

The match against Iceland exposed significant challenges for the Luxembourg Football Federation (FLF) squad, especially as they continue to struggle with a lengthy injury list.

Key players such as captain Laurent Jans, Seid Korac, Christopher Martins, and Danel Sinani are all sidelined, leaving national coach Jeff Strasser with difficult decisions ahead as he prepares for the next fixtures: away in Estonia and a return match against Bulgaria in Luxembourg next Tuesday.

Reflecting on the defeat to Iceland, defender Dirk Carlson acknowledged the quality of the opposition and the difficulties faced by the team. He expressed gratitude to the home supporters who remained behind the team despite the scoreline, emphasising that home matches are special partly due to that loyal backing.

Carlson noted that while Luxembourg started strongly and remained competitive after the break, Iceland proved to be exceptionally efficient and physically dominant.

Although Luxembourg held possession for extended periods, they struggled to create meaningful chances and were outperformed on second balls.

Injuries have complicated Luxembourg’s preparations, with National Coach Jeff Strasser now focused on regrouping the squad and finding solutions ahead of the next set of matches.

He pointed out that it was important to assess the severity of Laurent Jans’ muscular injury, especially as tight schedules with matches in quick succession increase the risk of such setbacks.

Strasser stressed the need for a positive outlook, noting that several young players featured in the squad against Iceland, which bodes well for the team’s future.

The Nations League group remains finely balanced after two matches. Iceland lead with four points, Luxembourg are close behind with three, followed by Estonia on two and Bulgaria with one.
