In a constantly-evolving world, lifelong learning gives individuals a real opportunity to adapt to technological evolutions, to meet new challenges, to explore new professional paths and to boost their career.
Investing in their own professional development gives everyone the ability to increase their skills, to strengthen their employability and to adapt effectively to a changing labour market.
To follow training within your area of expertise or to develop the skills that employers are looking for in the face of economic, technological and social changes, training support can help individuals as they pursue the development of their career path.
Training support measures, available subject to conditions, come in different forms such as special paid leave, measures to provide flexibility in your organisation of working hours or specific subsidies.
Special leave: a training opportunity
To support their skills development efforts, individuals can apply for various types of special training leave according to their situation and their objectives, including reimbursement of their wages.
Individual training leave provides free time for attending individual training. This special paid leave or training leave can be granted for up to 80 days over the course of a professional career. Training may or may not have a direct link to the trainee's current position.
Language training leave is another special paid leave to learn Luxembourgish or perfect one's use of the language and facilitate integration into society. It can be granted for up to 200 hours over the course of a professional career.
Organisation of working hours to attend training
Two schemes are proposed to enable individuals to balance their working time and training time according to their skills development objectives and their availability.
Personal working time adjustment makes it easier for the employee to attend training courses by taking advantage of flexible working time management. The company must have flexible working hours (flexitime).
Unpaid training leave allows employees to temporarily interrupt their professional commitments for training. The maximum length of unpaid leave is 6 consecutive months.
Specific financial support
Various sources of financing specifically for the training courses attended or the beneficiaries are offered in the Grand Duchy.
Tax deductibility makes it possible to deduct upskilling expenses from the taxable income on one's tax return.
The upskilling expenses must have a direct link to the professional activity performed by the employee and are to be borne by the latter.
State financial support for higher education, another type of financial support, may be applied for by anyone registered for a course of higher education in order to receive a grant and/or a loan, subject to certain conditions.
