In Luxembourg, as elsewhere, this insurance is used to cover losses which may be caused to a third person. A question then arises: is the driver covered too? The answer is no. He or she must take out specific insurance to be protected in the event of an accident.

Insurance for the vehicle and the driver
It’s Saturday evening. You’re coming back from a birthday party in Luxembourg City. You take the country lanes and then, before you know it, a wild boar crosses in front of your car at full speed.
You hit the animal hard and it disappears into the night. Your bonnet is badly damaged. In addition, during the collision, your head hit the steering wheel and you are injured.
After a few check-ups at the hospital, you realise that medical expenses are only partly reimbursed by the National Health Fund and that you are liable for the difference. To top it off, because you didn’t take out fully comprehensive cover, often called “Casco complète” in Luxembourg, your insurance does not cover the damage to your car.
In order to be covered following an accident for which you are responsible, you have to take out specific insurance which covers the damage caused to your vehicle and which also covers the driver of the insured vehicle. This insurance protects you and everyone who borrows your vehicle.
Driver protection for any vehicle

Before driving, you have to check whether the driver safety insurance policy is linked to the vehicle protection policy.
In order to be insured as a driver, whatever vehicle you borrow, you can take out dedicated driver insurance. This insurance is valid for all vehicles driven, whether or not you own them, even if they do not have driver-specific insurance.
Cover for all accidents
Bicycles, electric scooters, hoverboards, self-balancing unicycles... do you often get around using micro-mobility solutions? Over the last two years the use of these new individual electric vehicles has multiplied in the city. However, slow mobility carries risks and it is not uncommon for accidents to happen, sometimes with serious consequences.
Just imagine. You’re riding on a (push-along) scooter. During a moment of inattention you hit a pothole and fall off and hurt your wrist. If you hurt yourself, you need to know that medical expenses exceeding the National Health Fund reimbursements levels are not covered by Civil Liability insurance.
In this situation, to be covered, you must take out “accident” cover that can be an extension of your car insurance. Beyond car accidents, the best option is probably to protect yourself against all types of accidents: bicycle or skiing accidents, falling down stairs, etc.
The various types of compensation available
Medical expenses not reimbursed by social security are covered for all accident insurance policies taken out on a car, for a specific driver or for all types of accidents. Often a specific option is required for motorcycles and extreme sports.
These types of cover also deal with more serious situations that go beyond hospitalisation costs. For example: you become disabled as a result of a traffic accident. In this situation, compensatory financial compensation for your disability is offered by the insurance policy. The amount you receive allows you to reorganise your life, make appropriate adaptations to your home or professional retraining.
Finally, in the event of death of the insured person, all these insurance policies provide for the payment of a lump sum to the family.
