
VAPIANO MURDERS – Luxembourg’s court of appeal has upheld 30-year prison sentences for the two men convicted of murdering a Vapiano restaurant employee in Kirchberg in 2022. The judges also ordered the pair to pay compensation to the victim’s family.
ABUSE ALLEGATIONS – An independent expert commission is seeking witness testimonies following abuse allegations against a former director at the Luxembourg Children’s Village Foundation. Led by former Prosecutor General Robert Biever, the four-member panel is investigating allegations of indecent assault spanning a 30-year tenure. Anyone affected can submit confidential reports through the commission’s dedicated website.
FUEL PRICES – Finally some good news at the petrol pump as the price of diesel has fallen to €1.982 per litre following a significant drop of 9.5 cents, while SP98 will also decrease by 6 cents, bringing its new price to €1.814 per litre.
NEW PETITIONS – 15 new public petitions have gone live in Luxembourg today, calling for measures including a ban on the niqab and burqa in public spaces, a DNA database for dogs to tackle fouling in public areas, , and a feasibility study for a Formula 1 Grand Prix in the country.
IRAN WAR – Iran has rejected a reported American peace proposal as “excessive”, demanding an end to all fighting and war reparations. The US plan, would require Tehran to dismantle its nuclear programme in exchange for sanctions relief. Meanwhile fighting continues. Israel says it launched another large-scale strike against Iran overnight.
Britain and France are planning talks with around 30 countries on keeping the Strait of Hormuz open, after Iran blocked the strategically vital waterway. The discussions are said to be independent of any American diplomatic efforts.
G7 FOREIGN MINISTERS MEETING – G7 foreign ministers are meeting in France, with conflicts in the Middle East, Ukraine and Gaza high on the agenda. Ukraine’s top diplomat joining talks as Russia continues large-scale strikes across the country. President Zelensky is also expected to join discussions, with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio due to attend on Friday.
US MADURO – Ousted Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro is due in a New York court later today alongside his wife, facing charges including narco-terrorism and cocaine importation. Defence lawyers are expected to seek dismissal, arguing US sanctions have blocked payment of their legal fees.
FOOTBALL – The national football team face Malta today for the first leg of their Nations League play-off, with a place in the League C main draw on the line. Kick-off in Valetta is at 5.45pm. LONDON MARATHON – Organisers of the London Marathon are considering splitting the event across two days from 2027, potentially allowing up to 100,000 runners to take part. Last year’s race set a world record for finishers in a single marathon, with more than 56,000 crossing the line and raising over £87 million for charity.
CYCLING – Frenchman Dorian Godon has won stage three of the Tour of Catalonia and holds the overall lead. Luxembourg’s Bob Jungels was the best-placed local rider, finishing 51st, five seconds behind.
