
FUEL PRICES – Drivers who use diesel are in for some relief at the pumps after weeks of price increases. From midnight tonight, the price of diesel will fall by 30.4 cents to €1.882 per litre. Heating oil will also seeing a notable decrease. The price per litre will drop by 31.1 cents to €1.338. This means diesel will once again be cheaper than 98-octane petrol.
ANNUAL SPEED MARATHON – Police in Luxembourg will step up speed checks as part of the European Speedmarathon campaign on 15 April. During this 24-hour window next Wednesday, police will carry out intensified speed checks across the country, particularly during peak traffic hours. Residents are invited to vote online for checkpoint locations today on the Grand Ducal Police’s official Instagram page (@policelux).
NYT REPORT – US President Donald Trump’s controversial White House ballroom has reportedly received a steel donation from Luxembourg-based Arcelor Mittal. According to the New York Times, sources close to the project have confirmed that the steel is being provided as a donation. While exact figures have not been disclosed, last autumn Trump publicly indicated that he had received a steel contribution worth $37 million from what he described as a “great steel company”.
FAKE CONCERT – A scam falsely advertising an Eminem concert at Stade de Luxembourg is circulating online. The offer is fraudulent and authorities urge the public to remain cautious. According to the municipality, users who click on the link are redirected to a website offering tickets, asking them to provide personal and financial information. They also pointed out that Stade de Luxembourg is reserved for sporting events and does not host concerts.
32-HOUR TRUCE – Ukraine and Russia will cease fire for the Orthodox Easter holidays, the warring countries’ leaders said on Thursday, announcing a rare 32-hour halt in fighting. The four-year war previously saw limited and short truces, but Moscow and Kyiv were quick to trade accusations of violations. With talks on ending the four-year-old conflict derailed by the Middle East war, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said this week that he had made a holiday truce proposal through the United States.
HORMUZ REOPENING – Just 10 vessels have passed through Strait of Hormuz since the Middle East war ceasefire took effect, according to maritime tracking data, amid lingering fears about using the strategic waterway. Iran and the United States said the 167 kilometer (104 mile) strait between the Gulf and the Indian Ocean would reopen after the two-week truce was announced on Wednesday. More than five weeks after the war erupted with US and Israeli strikes on Iran, hundreds of ships with thousands of crew remain stuck either side of the strait.

Earlier this week, Americans Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover and Christina Koch along with Canadian Jeremy Hansen voyaged further from Earth than any human before, in a mission considered a key stepping stone towards eventual crewed lunar landings, and more. They are scheduled to splash down in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of San Diego at 5:07 pm local time (0007 GMT), after which NASA and the military will help them get out of the capsule and fly them to a recovery ship.
K-POP COMEBACK – K-pop megastars BTS kick off world tour with spectacular South Korea show. Tens of thousands braved heavy rain in South Korea yesterday to watch BTS open their world tour, marking a major comeback for the K-pop superstars. The seven-member group – widely regarded as the world’s biggest boy band – took to the stage together for the first time last month following a years-long hiatus prompted by mandatory military service, and after releasing their latest studio album “ARIRANG”.
GOLF – Rory McIlroy reeled off three consecutive back-nine birdies to fire a five-under par 67 and seize a share of the lead in Thursday’s opening round of the 90th Masters with top-ranked Scottie Scheffler three adrift. World number two McIlroy, trying to become only the fourth golfer to win back-to-back Masters titles, curled in a 29-foot birdie putt at the par-five 15th as he matched Sam Burns atop the leaderboard at Augusta National. “It’s a great start. I’m right into the tournament,” McIlroy said. “Great start but I can’t get ahead of myself. There’s a long way to go, but I’m happy with where I’m at.”
FOOTBALL – Former AC Milan and Japan star Keisuke Honda said he wanted to set a new record after signing for a Singapore club on Friday to resume his colourful playing career aged 39. Singapore Premier League side FC Jurong announced that the attacking midfielder, who appeared and scored at three World Cups, would play for them next season. Honda appeared most recently for Bhutan club Paro FC, playing in two games and scoring two goals in the 2024/25 season. Before that he played for Lithuania’s FK Suduva in 2021 and has also turned out for clubs in Japan, the Netherlands, Russia, Italy, Mexico, Australia, Brazil, and Azerbaijan.
BASKETBALL – Josh Hart and Jalen Brunson kept the New York Knicks in the hunt for second place in the NBA’s Eastern Conference as they beat the Boston Celtics 112-106 Thursday. The tight Knicks victory in a playoff-style atmosphere at Madison Square Garden puts New York two wins behind rival Boston, with just two regular season games remaining. Hart top-scored with 26 points, including a pair of clutch three-pointers in the game’s final minute that took an evenly poised game out of the Celtics’ reach.
