
WILMES AFFAIR – Prosecutors have opened a preliminary investigation into suspended orthopaedic surgeon Dr Philippe Wilmes, following health ministry reports concluding that some of his operations may not have been medically justified, and may have caused lasting harm to patients.
MURDER CHARGE – A former police officer, known as Gilles L, has been charged with parricide over the 2014 murder of his 56-year-old mother in Bereldange. Already serving a life sentence for murdering his sister and her husband with cyanide in 2016, a cold case breakthrough last year uncovered sufficient evidence to charge him.
EU UKRAINE – Luxembourg Foreign Minister Xavier Bettel has proposed Jean-Claude Juncker as a potential European negotiator with Russia regarding the Ukraine war. Speaking in Cyprus, Bettel argued for a negotiator from a non-bordering nation. However, EU chief diplomat Kaja Kallas dismissed the debate over individual names as a Russian trap.
EKABE DAIRY – Luxembourg's dairy farmers are facing an uncertain future after French multinational Lactalis announced it will stop processing their milk at its EKABE plant in Esch-sur-Alzette from April 2027, citing structural changes in the international dairy market. Agriculture Minister Martine Hansen, who was caught off guard by the decision, will meet the 68 affected producers on Monday.
WEEKEND ROADWORKS – Drivers heading towards Esch-sur-Alzette should expect significant delays this weekend, as roadworks on the N13 between Wickrange and Pontpierre will close several A4 motorway access points from Friday evening until Monday morning.
IRAN WAR – The United States and Iran have reached an agreement to extend their ceasefire and lift restrictions on shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, though U.S. President Donald Trump has yet to approve it and Iranian state media said it had not been finalized. According to media sources, the agreement would extend the truce for another 60 days and allow traffic to flow through the strategic waterway while negotiators tackle difficult issues such as Iran's nuclear programme.
EBOLA OUTBREAK – The head of the World Health Organisation has arrived in the Democratic Republic of Congo, declaring that the Ebola outbreak which has claimed more than 200 lives can be stopped. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus is travelling to the epidemic's epicentre in the northeast today, where he is urging warring factions to declare a ceasefire.
TAYLOR SWIFT PLOT – An Austrian court has sentenced a 21-year-old man to 15 years in prison after finding him guilty on all counts of plotting an Islamic State-linked attack on Taylor Swift's Eras Tour concerts in Vienna last year. Beran A’s plot forced the cancellation of three shows.
EUROPE HEATWAVE – A record-breaking early-summer heatwave is sweeping Europe, with France recording its highest-ever May temperature yesterday and the UK also reporting record May highs. Parts of Spain are bracing for temperatures above 40°C this week.
FOOTBALL – Paris St Germain manager Luis Enrique and Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta are holding pre-match press conferences in Budapest today ahead of the Champions League final on Saturday. Arsenal are preparing to face Paris Saint-Germain in the final, just 12 days after winning the Premier League.
Tonight's national football cup final sees FC Differdange take on Victoria Rosport at the Stade de Luxembourg. Kick-off is at 7.30pm. Differdange are chasing a seventh cup title, while Rosport are in only their second ever final. You can watch it live on RTL 2 or stream it on rtl.lu.
TENNIS – World number one Jannik Sinner has crashed out of the French Open, losing to Argentina's Juan Manuel Cerundolo after being struck down by dizziness and exhaustion while leading by two sets and 5-1 in the third. On the women's side, top seed Aryna Sabalenka and defending champion Coco Gauff both progressed safely to the third round.
CYCLING – France's Paul Magnier claimed his third stage win of this year's Giro d'Italia with a surprise bunch sprint victory on stage 18, while overnight leader Jonas Vingegaard retained the leader’s pink jersey. Today’s is the toughest stage yet, 151km in the Dolomites featuring six mountain climbs. The race finishes in Rome on Sunday
