Luxembourg

SUPERMARKET CYBERATTACK – Supermarkets across Europe have been hit by a cyberattack on their refrigeration systems. Fridges and freezers were targeted on Monday in seven countries: Luxembourg, Belgium, Estonia, Finland, Ireland, the Netherlands, and Sweden.

In Luxembourg and Belgium, several Delhaize stores were affected. The company says shops are still open and the food is safe. Carrefour in Belgium says 15 of its 700 stores were hit, with some fridges soaring in temperature. A similar attack hit supermarkets in France on 12 October.

EU Agriculture Commissioner Christophe Hansen has called the attacks a "deliberate attempt to disrupt food chains". It's not yet known who is behind them.

TRAIN CANCELLATIONS – CFL says train services between Luxembourg City and Metz, via Thionville, have resumed in both directions. However, delays and cancellations are still possible, following a technical incident on a track near Hettange-Grande in France that brought services in both directions to a complete halt. Passengers are asked to check their departures online.

ATM EXPLOSION ARRESTS – Three people have been arrested in the Netherlands over cash machine explosions in Luxembourg. The arrests came last Wednesday, after close cooperation between the two countries' judicial authorities. The suspects are linked to blasts in Eischen in May and Vianden in July, where the attackers failed to get any money.

DOG RESCUE – A dog that ran into a sewer pipe during a walk in Betzdorf on Sunday has been freed unharmed. Firefighters from the animal rescue group and the cynotechnical unit, helped by a local farmer, dug a hole to reach it.

World

IRAN ATTACK – US media are reporting that the American military has attacked Qeshm, Iran's largest island, in the Strait of Hormuz. It comes despite President Trump and Vice-President Vance saying yesterday that a deal "could happen". Iran's news agency IRNA says residents heard five large explosions. US government sources say the strikes were a response to Iranian attacks on ships in the Strait.

US MIDTERMS – Millions of Americans vote today in the midterm elections, seen as a test of President Trump's popularity. High living costs and the war in Iran are worrying many voters, and experts expect the Democrats to make gains. All 435 House seats and 35 of the 100 Senate seats are up for election. The Republicans hold narrow majorities in both chambers, so Democratic wins could significantly limit the President's room for manoeuvre.

The first polling stations on the US East Coast open at midday, Luxembourg time. First results are expected overnight.

UKRAINE WAR – 2,800 troops from 10 European countries will take part in a first exercise for a multinational force, to deploy once a ceasefire is in place in Ukraine. It runs in Poland from the 9–22 November, with troops chiefly from France and Britain, but also Belgium, Germany, and the Netherlands. It will test how quickly they could deploy. They would not have an offensive mission.

Three-way talks between Ukraine, Russia, and the United States resume next week. Working groups will meet in Abu Dhabi next Tuesday and Wednesday, despite deadly air strikes and cyberattacks on both sides. Before that, the American delegation is due to meet European representatives in Brussels this week, to discuss security guarantees for Ukraine.

Sport

FOOTBALL – It's matchday four of the league phase in the Champions League. Among the highlights are Atlético Madrid against Bayern Munich, Villareal against PSG, Barcelona play Aston Villa, and Man United take on Roma.

Pedro Resende is no longer the head coach of FC Differdange, effective immediately, as he prepares to take over at Excelsior Virton, who currently play in Belgium’s second division.

CRICKET – Australian batsman Glenn Maxwell has retired from international cricket. The 38-year-old announced his decision today, after being left out of the squad for Australia's Twenty20 series against England in November. He retired from one-day cricket last year, but had kept the door open for T20s.

TENNIS – Venus Williams said she was taking it "one week at a time" after suffering her 17th loss in a row in singles tennis with a straight-sets defeat to a player half her age at the Hong Kong Open. The 46-year-old former world number one went down 6-2, 6-3 to fellow American Mary Stoiana in the opening round.

Weather

It's a chilly but dry start to November. Expect a mix of sunshine and cloud throughout the day, with no rain on the way. Temperatures will start off cold at just 2–4°C in the morning, rising no higher than 9°C in the afternoon.
