
CAR ACCIDENT – Rescue services are reporting a serious accident. Yesterday early evening, a car overturned in Manternach. The driver was seriously injured and had to be cut free from the vehicle.
2027 BUDGET – Finance Minister Gilles Roth is presenting the 2027 budget to parliament this morning. Ahead of it, the head of the Chamber of Employees, Sylvain Hoffmann, has urged the government to put social investment, affordable housing and tax fairness at its heart. He says housing spending isn't enough, and that households pay more tax than businesses.
PHISHING SCAMS – The police have issued a warning regarding a surge in phishing scams that exploit the ongoing transition from Payconiq to the Wero payment application. Fraudsters are using deceptive emails and messages in an attempt to steal sensitive personal data, passwords, and banking details from citizens.
LUXEMBOURGISH PASSPORT – Between 2019 and 2024, exactly 55,230 people acquired Luxembourgish citizenship, as revealed by official government data. Brazilian nationals comprised the largest group of new citizens, followed by French and Portuguese applicants.
FRANCE SCHOOL PROTESTS – Pupils' unions in France have called for more school blockades today, and for further marches in Paris and other cities tomorrow, unless the government releases money to improve conditions in schools.Hundreds of thousands of pupils, teachers and parents took part in protests across the country yesterday, with clashes between demonstrators and police in places. The government has announced that classes will be suspended until the end of the week.
OCTOBER 7 ANNIVERSARY – Israel is marking three years since the October 7 Hamas attack, in which more than 1,200 people were killed and around 250 taken hostage. The terror attack on Israel triggered the Gaza war, in which Israel's military intervention has come under growing criticism. According to Palestinian figures, more than 74,000 people have died.
RUSSIA PLAGUE CASE – The World Health Organization and the United States are demanding answers from Russia over a possible case of plague. Russian media reported on Friday that a 28-year-old woman died after being infected with pneumonic plague in a Siberian laboratory. Russia denies it. The WHO says a full exchange of information is essential, and rates the risk to Russia and Europe as low.
BLACK SEA DRONE STRIKE – The search continues for missing crew from a cargo ship sunk in the Black Sea after drones hit two vessels. The dual strike came a day after another ship caught fire and sank off the Romanian coast, killing one and leaving one missing. Ukraine said the drone attack was launched by Russia.
CHEMISTRY NOBEL PRIZE – The Nobel Prize in Chemistry will be announced today. The winner or winners will be named by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in Stockholm at 11:45 this morning. Commentators say gene editing and molecules that regulate sleep and appetite are among the possible contenders.
FOOTBALL – Luxembourg have lost 2-0 to Bulgaria in the Nations League. A poor first half proved costly, and despite a much-improved second period, the Red Lions couldn't score. It's their third straight defeat, leaving them bottom of Group 4 in League C.
In other football games last night, Spain have reached the Nations League quarter-finals with a 2-1 win away to Croatia and England is also in the quarter finals after beating Czechia 3-0.
Lionel Messi has ended his Argentina career with a goal. The 39-year-old scored a penalty and set up two more in his 208th and final international, a 3-0 friendly win over Benin in Buenos Aires, before an emotional farewell.
TENNIS – Novak Djokovic has won the China Open after his opponent Alex de Minaur retired from the final, winning the 102nd title of his career. Carlos Alcaraz has won his first title since returning from a four-month injury layoff the Japan Open final. The top seed and defending champion beat world number 19 Jiri Lehecka in 2 sets.
