
ACCIDENTS – Luxembourg’s emergency services attended four separate accidents yesterday evening. A car hit a tree in Garnich, a pedestrian was struck on Avenue Monterrey in the capital, another person was knocked down in Esch-sur-Alzette, and a car hit a crash barrier on the nearby ring road. One person was injured in each incident.
SCHOOL RE-OPENING – Belvaux Poste primary school will reopen after the carnival holiday after health authorities gave the all-clear following the discovery of asbestos in the basement. The building was closed last week and pupils moved to other locations in the municipality. Normal classes resume on Monday.
MERZ TRIER – German Chancellor Friedrich Merz rallied around a thousand CDU supporters in Trier last night, ahead of regional elections in Rhineland-Palatinate in four weeks. He called for stronger European cooperation and defended Germany’s extended border controls
US EMBASSY POST – A social media post by the US Embassy in Luxembourg yesterday, showing a photograph of Ambassador Stacey Feinberg alongside Donald Trump, referred to as the “Greatest President in History”, has prompted a wave of negative and mocking responses from the public.
BOARD OF PEACE – Donald Trump’s controversial “Board of Peace” holds its first meeting in Washington today. The council, founded at the World Economic Forum, includes 28 countries – most of them autocratically governed – and is widely seen as a direct rival to the United Nations.
UKRAINE PEACE TALKS – There is still no sign of a ceasefire in Ukraine. Two days of talks in Geneva between representatives of both sides ended without result. President Zelensky said he was disappointed, noting that key issues, including a direct meeting with Putin and prisoner exchanges never even came up. Both sides say they are willing to talk again before the end of the month, but no date has been set.
AUSTRIA AVALANCHES – Three people died in avalanches in Austria yesterday, in Tyrol and Vorarlberg. A critical avalanche warning remains in place across the country, with up to 30 cm of fresh snow forecast today.
TAYLOR SWIFT – Taylor Swift has been named the world’s best-selling musical artist for the 4th consecutive year, according to the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI). The South Korean boy band Stray Kids, Canadian artists Drake and The Weeknd and Puerto Rican artist Bad Bunny follow behind.
WINTER OLYMPICS – A big disappointment for Luxembourg’s skier Gwyneth Ten Raa. She failed to finish her first run in the women’s slalom in Cortina d’Ampezzo yesterday, missing out on the second run and any chance at a medal. Mikaela Shiffrin took gold in that event. Meanwhile Grand Duke Henri paid a visit to Luxembourg’s Olympic athletes on Tuesday, meeting with them at the Olympic Village in Cortina d’Ampezzo, where he presented them with the official golden International Olympic Committee pin, a token given to all participants in the Games.
Norway continue to lead the medals table with 33 medals, including 15 gold. Cross-country skier Johannes Klaebo claimed his tenth Olympic gold yesterday, making him the most decorated Winter Olympian in history. Today’s highlights include the women’s ice hockey final between the USA and Canada.
FOOTBALL – In the Champions League last night, Norwegian side Bodo/Glimt pulled off a major upset, beating Inter Milan 3-1. Newcastle thrashed Qarabag 6-1, Atletico Madrid were held 3-3 by Club Brugge, and Bayer Leverkusen won 2-0 away at Olympiacos.
Luxembourg’s skies will remain locked in a familiar grey. Steady rain is expected through the morning, easing into lighter rain and patchy drizzle later in the afternoon and evening.
